Is a vibe-coded app safe for customer data?

Check customer-data access, storage, integrations, and operating controls before putting real records into an AI-built business application.

Key takeaways

  • The development method alone does not establish whether customer data is protected.
  • Verify who can access each record across the app, database, and connected tools.
  • Use representative test data until the relevant controls have been checked.

A vibe-coded app can handle customer data only when its access rules, data handling, and operating controls are appropriate for that use. The fact that an app builder generated a login screen does not establish those protections. Review the actual application and connected services before introducing real customer records.

The OWASP Application Security Verification Standard provides a framework of security requirements for applications and services. It can help an engineering team define a review scope. Using its name in a proposal is not evidence that the relevant requirements were tested.

What customer information does the app really need?

Start with an inventory. Identify the fields users enter, uploaded files, generated documents, analytics events, and copies sent to integrations. A customer-support form may also send its contents to email, a notification service, or an AI provider.

Remove information the workflow does not need. If a booking requires a name and contact number, collecting an identity document creates additional handling obligations without necessarily helping the booking.

Use fabricated or appropriately anonymized data while building. A screenshot of a successful test should not expose an actual customer record to everyone reviewing the project.

Where should access rules apply?

Ask the engineer to trace one record from the interface through the API and database, then into any storage or external service. Each part needs an appropriate boundary. Hiding an item on a page is insufficient if the same user can request it directly from an endpoint.

SituationExpected result
Customer opens another customer's record linkAccess denied without exposing the record
Employee loses a roleFormer privileges stop working
Public visitor requests a private fileFile remains unavailable
Integration account is revokedIts old access can no longer be used

The review should include read, update, download, and deletion operations. Testing only the most visible screen leaves other paths unexamined.

What should a business owner ask to see?

Request a short data-flow description, a user-role matrix, and evidence from the important access tests. Ask which accounts hold the database, file storage, deployment, and AI credentials. Record who can revoke access if a supplier or employee leaves.

For example, an agency might use a test customer and a test staff account to demonstrate that a private quote cannot be accessed through the wrong identity. The evidence should identify the environment and test performed, rather than showing a generic security badge.

Also agree retention and deletion behaviour. Deleting a record in the app may leave copies in logs, backups, exports, or connected tools. The responsible team needs to understand those paths and the business's actual requirements.

What if the app is already live?

Prioritize the records and actions with the largest consequences. Restrict unnecessary access while the team investigates. Keep changes controlled so an attempted fix does not destroy the evidence needed to understand an issue.

A review has a scope and a point in time. Continue reviewing the boundaries when new integrations, user roles, or data categories are introduced. A later feature can change the risk even when the original application was checked carefully.

Review the app before introducing more customer data

Share the intended workflow and the categories of information involved. Request a vibe-coded app audit to identify the important boundaries, document findings, and prioritize the next changes.

Frequently asked questions

Does using a managed database make the app secure?

The provider manages part of the infrastructure, but your application still needs appropriate configuration, permissions, and data handling. Review that shared responsibility for the actual setup.

Can I prove safety with a vulnerability scan?

A scan can contribute evidence for the checks it performs. It cannot by itself establish that the application's business permissions and workflows are correct.

Should we upload real data to test the app?

Begin with representative non-production data. Use real information only through an approved process after the relevant access, handling, and environment decisions have been reviewed.
