# How do I monitor an AI-built app and control its running costs?

Monitor the business journey, failures, integrations, and usage charges in a vibe-coded app so the team can detect problems and explain the monthly bill.

Vibe Coding AI Coding Agents Observability Cost Optimization

## Key takeaways

- Monitor completed business tasks alongside server uptime.
- Track usage where it connects to paid services and repeated work.
- Give alerts an owner and a practical response procedure.

Monitor the user journeys and integrations your business depends on, alongside resource usage and paid-service consumption. Record enough information to investigate a failed task without collecting unnecessary sensitive content. Set cost alerts and name the person responsible for responding to them.

The [OpenTelemetry observability primer](https://opentelemetry.io/docs/concepts/observability-primer/) explains how signals such as logs, metrics, and traces help teams understand system behaviour. The business task is choosing which behaviour matters and what someone should do when it changes.

## What should we monitor first?

Identify the app's most important outcome: a saved enquiry, confirmed booking, issued document, or processed order. Decide how the system can distinguish successful completion from a page merely returning a response.

For an illustrative quoting app, useful signals could include requests received, quotes successfully saved, integration failures, and items awaiting human review. A green uptime indicator could coexist with a queue of quotes that never reached the sales team.

Start with a small set of signals tied to clear decisions. A dashboard filled with charts nobody uses creates work without improving the operating response.

## Where do running costs come from?

| Cost source | Question to investigate |
| --- | --- |
| Hosting and compute | Which workloads consume the resources? |
| Database and storage | How do data volume and retention affect usage? |
| AI services | Which tasks call a model, and how often? |
| Messaging and external APIs | What triggers each paid request? |
| Retries and failures | Is the app paying repeatedly for incomplete work? |
| Support | How much human time goes into correction and recovery? |

Use the provider's current billing information for the actual account and plan. Do not assume a free development allowance describes the cost of the production workload.

## How do we connect the bill to business activity?

Track a useful unit such as a completed quote or processed document. Include failed attempts and human correction when assessing the cost of that unit. A low per-request price can still produce an expensive workflow if each task needs several attempts.

Set an initial budget and compare representative usage with the assumptions. If traffic increases, inspect whether the workload is useful customer activity, an inefficient integration, or unwanted automated requests.

Avoid collecting raw customer content merely to explain a bill. Record identifiers and usage information appropriate to the task, with controlled access and retention.

## What makes an alert useful?

An alert needs a condition, an owner, and a response. For example, a sustained increase in failed order updates could direct the on-call owner to check a particular integration and pause a queue if necessary.

Decide which signals require immediate attention and which belong in a routine review. If every minor event pages the same person, the important failure can be lost in noise.

Keep the operating notes current as the app changes. A new AI feature, scheduled task, or file-processing job may introduce a cost or failure path that the original monitoring did not cover.

## Make the operating cost understandable

Bring recent bills, the critical workflows, and any existing logs or dashboards. [Discuss ongoing maintenance for your AI-built app](https://foundrysoft.co/services/vibe-coding-maintenance) to connect monitoring, cost visibility, and a practical support process.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does my hosting dashboard provide enough monitoring?**

It can show platform health and usage, but may not know whether your business task completed correctly. Add signals that connect technical activity to the application's intended result.

**Can we set a hard spending cap?**

Check the controls supported by each provider and plan. Decide how the app should behave if a limit is reached so cost control does not create an unexplained failure for users.

**Should we log every AI prompt and response?**

Only when the purpose, access, and retention are appropriate. Often a smaller set of identifiers, outcomes, and usage information can support operations without retaining all customer content.
