## Key takeaways

- Hand over the operating context as well as the repository.
- Make known issues and expected business behaviour explicit.
- Verify that the receiving developer can run and understand the app.

Give the receiving developer the business goal, repository, operating setup, data model, connected services, and known issues. Include instructions for running and releasing the app and examples of the behaviour that must be preserved. Verify the handover by having the new maintainer follow those instructions through a representative workflow.

GitHub's [README guidance](https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/managing-your-repositorys-settings-and-features/customizing-your-repository/about-readmes) describes a repository document as a place to explain what a project does and how people can use it. That is a useful starting point, with additional operating material appropriate to the app.

## What business context does the developer need?

Explain who uses the application, what task they complete, and which system records the final result. Share the constraints that shaped the current version, including any intentionally manual steps.

Provide examples of a normal completed task and important exceptions. A new developer can understand a booking rule more accurately from a few expected cases than from a screenshot of an empty calendar.

Mark which decisions are settled and which are still proposals. Otherwise the new maintainer may treat an experiment or an agent's earlier suggestion as an accepted requirement.

## What belongs in the technical handover?

| Area | Material to provide |
| --- | --- |
| Code | Repository, main working branch, and relevant change history |
| Setup | Runtime, dependency installation, configuration names, and local run steps |
| Data | Schema, migrations, representative test records, and data ownership |
| Services | Integration purpose, account administrator, and supported access route |
| Release | Build, deployment, verification, and recovery instructions |
| Issues | Reproducible failures, workarounds, and priorities |

Transfer secrets through an approved process rather than embedding their values in a README or sharing them in a chat prompt. The documentation should explain what configuration is needed without becoming another source of credential exposure.

## Should I include the agent's conversation history?

Include selected decisions and useful context, but do not expect someone to read every prompt. A long transcript can contain abandoned approaches, incorrect assumptions, private data, and code that never entered the project.

Summarize the current design and the reasons behind important decisions. Link to the relevant change or issue where possible. The repository and operating documentation should explain the system that exists today.

For an illustrative customer portal, the developer needs to know how organizations, users, and document permissions work. Knowing that an agent spent three days generating the interface is much less useful.

## How do we know the handover worked?

Ask the receiving developer to set up a separate development environment, run the relevant checks, and complete one important user journey. They should identify the deployment destination and the steps needed to verify a release.

Record missing access, unclear instructions, and behaviour that could not be established. Resolve those gaps before assuming the app has transferred successfully.

Keep the outgoing maintainer available for a defined period if that is part of the arrangement. Agree who owns new work during the transition so an urgent fix does not become trapped between suppliers.

## Prepare the app for another engineering team

Bring the current repository and whatever setup notes exist. [Discuss a maintenance and handover review](https://foundrysoft.co/services/vibe-coding-maintenance) to turn scattered project context into a practical operating package.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is a GitHub link enough to start?**

It helps, but the developer also needs appropriate access, configuration, business rules, and context about the connected services. Start with the repository and document the missing pieces.

**Should we clean up the code before handover?**

Discuss obvious gaps, but avoid a broad last-minute refactor without review and verification. Accurate setup instructions and known-issue records can be more valuable than cosmetic restructuring.

**Can the new developer work while we keep using the app?**

Yes, with an agreed environment and release process. Keep development work separate from production changes and define who is responsible for approving and deploying fixes during the transition.
